When it's applied to even slightly more realistic stories, though, it carries a rather noxious ideology of predestination. Peter Parker should have had an accident that gave him the potential to be a great hero or a real louse (no pun intended) and we see that struggle, and what it costs him to learn. As soon as they bring in the twaddle about being chosen by a spider deity, they've destroyed the value of the idea that heroism comes from within. Then he might just as well have had midichlorians ("middle chlorine..." wtf?) or been a magic prince. Princes or deities or folks who regard themselves as somehow chosen don't have any special claim to the moral high ground. Everybody has to work that particular journey out for themselves.Dave Morrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14468228790874490693noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7321339472666778123.post-24258983462458902062011-05-01T05:24:24.796+01:002011-05-01T05:24:24.796+01:00I liked this post, thanks. I found the concept of midichlorians unforgivable - the wonder of the Force in Star Wars mythos was that it was available to everyone, they just had to connect with their emotions and, well, pay more attention than the average person could be bothered to.

I find characters like Jack and Estelle who discover their inner hero more inspiring because they teach us we all carry that potential. Divine pre-selection was invented by people who didn't want the average Joe to figure that out.Sandyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00599376696122828129noreply@blogger.com
